A New Event At The Fair This Year Has Fans, And Competitors Alike, Jumping For Joy.

DockDogs has been featured on ESPN, and the Outdoor Channel and are now here in Kennewick for the fair. And after starting as simply sideshow entertainment at outdoor sports competitions, DockDogs has now taken on an identity of it’s own.

It’s a competition for dogs, in which they compete in many different events. Contests like distance jumping, speed retrieval and high jump. And it brings local competitors, as well as dogs that travel around the country together in competition.

“You see it on TV and it looks cool, but when you’re actually here in person and seeing the dogs fly out 20-25 feet it’s just amazing,” says DockDogs Event Manager A.J. Leasure.

And you have a chance to do just that; come out and see these amazing dogs. They have been jumping all week long, but the competition really heats up this Saturday for the finals. That will be happening at 6:30 PM, this Saturday, right near the main entrance to the fair.

What Is The First Thing Most Doctors Recommend For Treatment Of Dog Allergies? The Unthinkable – They Want You To Give Up Your Best Friend.

Anyone with a pet can understand just how devastating this could be. Many people love their dog or cat more than almost anyone else. I know I would never consider giving up my fur baby, and I suffer from horrible allergies. There are many other dog allergy remedies you can try so that you never have to consider giving up your beloved pet.

Dog Allergy Symptoms

When people are allergic to their dog or cat, it is their immune system overreacting to pet dander, saliva or urine. When the body comes into contact with one of these allergens, it overreacts causing an immune system response which triggers many unwanted symptoms. Dog allergy symptoms can include red or itchy eyes, wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, stuffy nose, posts nasal drip or a skin rash. The severity of the symptoms will depend on the severity of your body’s reaction.

Remedies for Dog Allergies

The best way to treat a dog or cat allergy-aside from giving up your pet-is to make changes in your home environment. Your doctor or allergy specialist may recommend keeping your cat or dog outside as an alternative to giving them up. Another option would be to keep your dog or cat in one room or area of the house. These still may not be options you want to consider. Other changes you could make would include installing an air filter in your house to try and catch as many airborne particles as possible. You could also be sure to frequently wash your dog’s bed or a favorite blanket. Trying cleanup as much dog hair as possible. Basically, the natural allergy treatment would be to clean much more frequently. Better yet, have a family member who does not suffer from dog allergies clean the area for you, as it could stir up any settled dander or allergens which would aggravate your allergies.

Allergy medications are another alternative to having to give up your pet. Allergy OTC (over the counter) options include antihistamines, and decongestants, eye drops, Claritin and nasal sprays. Most of these medications provide symptomatic the allergy relief. Allergy shots are the only allergy remedy option that tries to reduce allergies over the long term. Allergy shots try to build up your body’s tolerance to allergens, making your immune response much smaller in the future.

Your Dog Is Your Best Friend. And As Such The Last Thing You Want To Do Is Let Your Dog Suffer In Pain.

Raising a dog means knowing that your dog will face health problems whether it’s suffering from arthritis, a disease, sickness, infection, or an injury. There are several canine pain relief solutions that pet owners can turn to. The first thing you need to do is find out what’s wrong with your dog. The common signs that your dog may be in pain is if he starts behaving differently. Dogs may try to hide their pain out of natural instinct so it’s not always easy to tell if something is wrong. An example of this is your dog not chewing a bone tightly or only chewing it from different angles. This may be a sign of some dental problems.

Another example if your dog is not eating and there is massive weight loss or gain, it is strong sign that he is not coping with some kind of pain well. A visit to the vet may be in order if this persists. Try checking your pet’s balance too. If your pet is stumbling often, it may be a sign of pet pain in his joints or limbs. A common problem that dogs encounter when they get older is arthritis. The pain that your dog gets from this condition can immobilize movement. Prescription canine pain relief pills can help lessen the pain experienced by your dog. Examples of these canine pain relief pills are NSAIDs or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs which includes Rimadyl, EtoGesic, Deramaxx, Ketoprofen, and Meloxicam.

In order to get these painkillers, you need a prescription from your veterinarian to make sure that it’s okay for your dog. You have to be aware that medications for pet pain have side effects so you need to monitor your dog for liver problems if the painkillers need to be taken for an extended period of time. Another solution for pet pain is corticosteroids which are considered as potent anti-inflammatory agents. However these products have long term side effects so they should be used as a final resort to a problem after all the other options are exhausted.

The most popular canine pain relief is aspirin which is both an anti-inflammatory and a painkiller. This is known by pet owners as the most obvious canine pain relief solution. However, there is a risk of stomach and intestinal upset as a side effect. Remember that you have to buy aspirin made for dogs – Palaprin6 is an example. Aside from the prescribed pet pain solutions, there are natural ways to ease to your dog’s suffering. The most common natural canine pain relief is acupuncture. It is done the same way as it is on humans. Acupuncture pain relief works by boosting and stimulating the immune system of your dogs to alleviate the pain. This Acupuncture is not a onetime session but rather an ongoing treatment plan.

In conclusion, there are many options to consider when treating pet pain. The most important thing is to spot problems early and find out what’s wrong so you can start a treatment plan. With all the solutions available to pet owners, they can keep their pets pain free until they have full recovered.

Did You Know That America Has An Almost Unknown Force Of Heroes Who Risk The Most Dangerous Missions?

The do scouting, searching for explosives, helping to save wounded soldiers and other clandestine and super dangerous activities? These heroes have for years been unsung and at one time were abandoned or worse at the end of their tour…with nary a thanks or even a ride home.

America’s War Dogs have saved the lives of countless Americans and are only recently being recognized and given a 2nd chance at life in appreciation for their heroic deeds. Some are injured and handicapped physically or perhaps are simply longing for a home…which bears fruit to the real question of today.

Would You Save the Life of a Handicapped Hero?

If we examine our attitude toward dogs with handicaps, (they may be war dogs or dogs from your local neighborhood or shelter) perhaps we can learn a bit about ourselves in the process.

IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A DOG this is still worth reading as it is really about the meaning and value of all life.

Generally, when people decide to adopt or rescue a dog, the first thought that comes to mind is that cute puppy they saw in a pet store( bad choice) shelter, rescue, or happily playing in the their neighbor’s front yard.

There is no doubt that a healthy young puppy can be a wonderful addition to any household. And a lively, already house trained, ready to go adult pooch can be just the perfect addition for a busy household looking for a ‘ready to go’ companion.

Perfect puppy, perfect adult dog, what can be better than that? The answer may surprise you but the most rewarding experience that you ever have may be the time your life is blessed by the company of a handicapped dog.

I have had the opportunity to spend untold hours in hospitals for patients of the human variety. I’ve seen children stricken with cancer, elderly folks propped up in bed during their final illness, someone’s former husband or wife, alone and suffering through an illness, praying for a chance to be needed again.

In every age group, with every infirmity, there remains in the heart of the afflicted a desire to love and be loved. I would sometimes stop and chat for a moment or two with such a patient on their way to their next medical procedure or grabbing a few moments of freedom during a wheel chair ride.

Anxious to interact they would recount stories of their youth, times they spent fishing, with family, being needed.

The very same analogy applies to handicapped dogs. Whether born with a deformity, injured in an accident or during war, abused or recovering from a medical condition, these dogs yearn to love and be loved. Having endured so much to survive they want nothing more than to show their appreciation, their love, and to share the wisdom that only a soul that has endured much is capable of.

War dogs have endured the most extreme of dangers and while most are healthy and sound they have never had a chance at a happy home life.

When you adopt a handicapped dog or a war dog you will become a student. A student of life, a student of love, a student of compassion, and you will have a teacher who will be your most joy-filled companion in life’s adventures. And you will be adopting a hero, handicapped physically or one that just needs and deserves a loving home.

If you are ready to adopt a handicapped dog in her journey of life you must be prepared to give her your time and necessary resources such as a doggy wheelchair.

In return, you will be repaid by an experience that will ingrain upon your heart and soul a perspective that will stay with you for the remainder of your life. Lucky dog, lucky you.:)

War dog or local handicapped buddy who needs a 2nd chance at life.. they are all heroes and pals.

If You Are Going To Be Away All Day, Dog Daycare May Be Just The Thing For You.

In a dog day care center, your dog will get to enjoy fun play sessions with other dogs as well as human company. This will help to socialize him and increase his confidence when facing new people and new dogs. It will also provide him with good mental and physical stimulation so that he will be calm and happy to sit by your feet when you get home.

Leaving your dog home alone, all day, may cause him to get destructive, because he has too much energy, and bring about separation anxiety issues. Note that dog daycare centers are very different from the usual boarding kennels because they have many playgroups during the day where your dog may interact with other dogs. They also have nicer facilities, are commonly no-cage, and have trained staff to supervise your dog.

Before putting your dog in daycare, consider the following:

Temperament of your dog. Dogs that are most appropriate for daycare have easy-going, submissive personalities. My Siberian Husky is a very relaxed, easy-going dog, and she pretty much gets along with all the dogs and all the people she meets. We send her to daycare quite often. She enjoys herself and comes home happy and tired. My male Shiba Inu, is a stress puppy. He likes routine and becomes stressed whenever there is any change, and whenever we are not around. I have tried putting him in two different daycare centers (one afternoon each) and he totally hated it. He came back very depressed and started whining in the car for several days thereafter. His temperament makes him unsuited for daycare.

Dog daycare facilities.

Make sure they have a competent and trained staff. Make sure that all handlers use positive reinforcement techniques, i.e. no hitting, no slapping, and no pinning your dog to the ground (alpha rolls). Rather than helping to socialize your dog, these bad experiences may make him fearful and aggressive towards other dogs and humans.

Make sure the floors have a nice no-skid rubber surface and not concrete. If dogs run on concrete too much, it is bad for their pads.

Make sure they are a no-cage facility. The dog daycare facility should have nice rooms with beds or a soft surface for the dogs to rest. The entire facility should be well ventilated so that it will be comfortable for your dog. It should have ceiling fans or air conditioning for the summer, and heating for the winter.

Make sure that they group the dogs properly during play time (e.g., small vs big, active vs non-active). Make sure that the play-group assigned to each handler is not too large. This ensures that the dogs will be well supervised and reduces the probability of fights and bullying behavior during play.

Kennel Cough. Make sure your dog is vaccinated for kennel cough. Both my Shiba and Siberian have gotten kennel cough just from staying overnight at an emergency room. Even though they try to be careful in these daycare centers, kennel cough is highly contagious. Daycare centers have a large number of dogs each day, that interact closely with each other, so there is a very high likelihood of getting infected.

A well-managed daycare center is a great place for socializing your dog to other dogs. Unlike dog parks, daycare play sessions are well supervised, by trained staff. The play groups are not too big, and they try to group dogs with similar size, and energy levels together, so they will get along.

Daycare centers usually have a meet-up interview, in the beginning. They will only accept social dogs that will fit-in to their facility. Many of the dogs there are also regulars and have had good practice on dog socialization manners.

On the downside, daycare costs can be somewhat high. There is also a high likelihood that your dog may get sick. While daycare centers do require dogs to be properly immunized, it is difficult to detect and separate those that may have the cold or flu. Unless your dog has a strong immunity system, he may get sick more frequently from his exposure to large numbers of dogs.

Take Care Of Your Dogs Ears

Taking Care Of Dogs’ Sensory Organs Is One Of The Most Important Activities In The Dog Care Process.

They must be given due importance. Ear care is considered the most important thing regarding dogs. Their hearing capacity is extremely good in nature, and that is one of the biggest assets for police dogs and security dogs. They are trained to react even to the smallest sound that they hear. So, their ears and their hearing capacity should be in peak condition.

Dogs’ ears are likely to be affected frequently with dust and debris leading to infections and other ear related problems. Their ears should be cleaned regularly. If they are not cleaned regularly, they develop ear mites. Ear mites are parasites which develop in the outer side of the ear canal. The symptoms of having ear mites are dogs keep on shaking their head or they constantly scratch their ears. They also try to rub their ears on the floor or sometimes they have excessive wax. These mites cause irritation. The other most affected part is its tail. Dogs mostly couch by keeping their tail near their head and so the tail gets affected. They also develop a bad odor. Dogs must be rushed immediately to a veterinarian to get cured. During their medication to the ears, the tail must also be paid attention.

Dogs’ ears are very sensitive in nature. They should be cleaned only by a veterinarian. People without proper training may damage the dog’s ears. You can learn about the cleaning methods from a practitioner and you can clean your own puppy. But this applies only to regular cleaning, and in case of an infection, definitely a veterinarian should be called on.

Dog care is not just feeding and hanging out with the dog. A bundle of responsibilities handled with perfection is the right path of taking care of a dog. One should acquire information from a doctor or through other sources to help them in difficult situations. Any knowledge gained about dog care will serve the right purpose at the right time.

One Giant Leap For DogKind?

When the Soviet Union sent two dogs into flight 50 years ago today, the dogs became instant celebrities. Belka and Strelka became the first living creatures to circle the earth and return alive, and gave the Soviet Union a run on the race to be first in space.

Those pooches must have been horrified, methinks, and terribly mistreated, but got a heroes welcome home.

Russia is celebrating that anniversary today, and in Moscow, news programs were topped with the anniversary, according to the Associated Press. Sad times there with the heatwave and drought. They need to remember better days, but are we sure using dogs in this test was a sign of a better day? Mice and other creatures also made the trip.

They spent a day in space. Strelka went onto have six pups, one of which was presented by Nikita Khrushchev to President John F. Kennedy’s daughter Caroline in 1961.

Times have changed. Both dogs were preserved after their deaths and are on display at a museum in Moscow. Smithsonian’s Air & Space has more stories and images (hint: Kennedy’s dog’s puppies).

Secure Your Dog While Driving In The Car

A new study by AAA found that driving under the influence of a dog can be just as dangerous as cell phones, screaming kids, and loud music, according to a story on Fox News. If a driver is distracted by a dog in the car, it can lead to crashes.

And here’s an oddball statistic reported by Fox: “AAA said that if a 10-pound dog is loose in a car and it crashes at 50 miles per hour, the pet could exert 500 lbs of pressure–endangering the pet and anyone in its path.”

Imagine what a 95-pound dog like Jake could do! I won’t even bother with the math.

The report recommends restraining dogs with doggy seat belts, harnesses, or in crates. I guess that would put an end to joyous moments, like the one in the video below.

I recently talked to a pet owner who caused Heat Stroke in his dog by throwing a ball. It was hot and humid (in Southern Ontario). His dog is a mixed Northern Breed, who has some difficulty cooling him down.

BUT…

it happened fast…in less than 30 minutes. His dog collapsed, so he NEEDED to act quickly.

Here is WHAT you need to know:

SIGNS

The signs depend upon the extent of heat stroke. In the early stages, your pet will pant rapidly, have thick, ropy saliva, and have bright red gums. His body temperature will be between 104 to 106 Fahrenheit.

As the body temperature climbs above 106, your pet will go into shock with subsequent organ shutdown. He will have Pale gums, be weak and dizzy, with vomiting and diarrhea.

The brain becomes affected and he may seizure or fall into a coma. In this case he requires immediate, life saving veterinary intervention.

CAUSES

Being in a hot car. Never leave your pet in a parked car in sunlight. The car heats up to be like a sauna even on mild days.

Excessive exercise on a hot day. Minimize exercise in the heat of the day. Avoid exercising your dog in unusually hot or humid conditions especially at the start of summer. Most heat stroke cases are seen at the start of summer.

SOLUTIONS

AWAY FROM THE HEAT. Remove your pet from the hot environment. Get him out of the car and away from the sun.

TO THE VET ASAP. If you suspect severe heat stroke and your pet has collapsed, then get your pet immediate veterinary care. In this case, the organs may be shutting down and he needs specialized care to survive. While in transit it is important to continue to apply cool wet towels to the back of the neck

WHAT’S THE TEMP?  Use a rectal thermometer and find your pet’s exact temperature. If it is 104 or higher, then he has heat stroke, and you need to take action.

COOL DOWN. Run cold water over the back of your pet’s head. Place cold packs wrapped in towels between the back legs, on the belly and in the arm pits. Wet towels can be used instead. You can use a garden hose to run the water over the back of his head.

ALCOHOL SOLUTION. Rubbing alcohol will also speed up heat loss- it can be applied to the belly and groin and cool as it evaporates. Liberally spread it on the skin… the most important thing is reducing the temperature in a controlled way.

DON’T IMMERSE IN COLD WATER. This treatment does bring your pet’s temperature down but tends to overcorrect it and then your pet may be seriously unwell, cold and wet.

Don’t expect to KNOW what to do without practice. It’s unlikely that you’ll have your computer with you when an emergency happens.

Having A Dog Can Be Daunting.

It is easy to get lost in the wave of tips and things to do from well-meaning friends. Caring for your dog does not have to be confusing. We make it simpler for you by giving you a checklist of must-do’s to care for your dog.

1. Have your dog licensed. This includes vaccinating it for rabies and other steps or legal requirements that you can get from your veterinarian, animal shelter personnel and humane society.

2. Spay your dog.  Aside from controlling animal population and making sure that you do not have to deal with unwanted puppies, there are many benefits in neutering your dog. Spaying your dog can help it have a healthier and longer life. It also reduces behavioral problems, lessens the chance that it will bite people or run away.

3. Read up on dog health issues like feeding and nutrition, training, grooming and bathing. Arm yourself with information on how to properly care for your dog’s health. Keep abreast with current news related to your dogs, like the recent melamine contamination in some dog foods. Educate yourself on how to keep your dog healthy and apply it.

4. Have your dog regularly checked up by the veterinarian.  You must choose your vet carefully by making sure that he or she does not only have the credentials and capabilities to care for your dog, but also the facilities and personality to carry out the work.

5. Keep your dog under control at all times. This means that you would need to have it on leash outside your home, especially when you are not looking.

6. Give your dog a balanced and nutritious pet food, and lots of fresh water.

7. Make sure your dog gets enough exercise. Physical fitness is one of the benchmarks of a healthy dog. Walk it, play with it, and take it jogging. Ensure, however, that you do not over exert your pet.

8. Fit your dog with a dog collar and dog ID tag. Put its name, your name, address and other contact details on the tag. This will help anybody who finds your dog return it to you in case you lose it.

9. Train your dog. If you can not, look for professional trainers to do it for you. A good training helps control your dog’s behavior. It also gives you a great opportunity to bond with your pet.

10. Proper shelter is a must for caring for your dog. Provide an area inside the house where your dog can roam free, stay in, rest and spend time with the family.
